• Following the assassination of Benazir Bhutto at an election rally, hundreds of thousands of Pakistani citizens came to see her buried. The gathering was, “chaotic but peaceful,” according to the New York Times. This comes all while outbreaks of violence continue to flash across greater Pakistan. Supporters of Mr. Bhutto have been rioting in several cities, but the government has said that there are “no immediate plans” to postpone parliamentary elections on January 8. The elections are to be the first in eight years, following President Pervez Musharraf’s eight year military rule. Bhutto was the leader of Pakistan’s largest political party and her successor has not yet been named. Many within Pakistan have openly blamed the Musharraf government for failing to secure Bhutto’s safety.

• In Kenya, President Mwai Kibaki is trailing opposition leader Raila Odinga. If Kibaki loses, he will be the first sitting Kenyan president to be shown the door by the electorate. This would be a milestone for Kenya and sub-saharan Africa as a whole, whose leaders do not relinquish the reigns of power easily.
